Ruby on Rails - 2006-03-11
A programming environment worthy of your attention!
The forums and irc channels are whispering about this new amazing programming environment, i decided to try it some weeks ago when I found this tutorial on Digg made by apple. So I started reading it and learned that you need to install some things, fortunate apple's tutorial directed me to another tutorial with great installing instructions! So I followed the instructions and installed Ruby on Rails along with the web server LightTPD and MySQL.
It took some time but it worked fine. I started with the apple tutorial but got some errors in the beginning which forced me to install a mysql GUI. To make a long story short... I was to impatient that day to finnish it.
Some time went by till my girlfriend spoke of a teacher on her school favoring stuff like Rails and Ajax, which made me remember the unfinnished tutorial so I thought it would be a good idea to finnish it. So I spent a couple of hours finishing it.
Rails is very different from PHP/MySQL which I normally use but not in a bad way, I imagine work to be done twice as fast with Rails and I'm not exaggerating. Rails is created in a very genuine way as might be expected since the core development team are apple users :).
Something I love with rails is the automatically generated file structure which makes your project nice and clean. Rails is the ideal development environment for most project but especially for teamwork since it's structure is so logical.
The only downside as I see it is that it's not a de facto standard like PHP, I need to write web applications that are able to run on web hosting services since most clients don't have their own servers.
But I'm pretty sure Rails will grow on the market and when It's grown enough; I plan to be ready with knowledge and experience.
So if you're in to web development; I definitely recommend you looking in to this brand new development environment and it's not a bad idea starting with this tutorial from apple!
