Attitude - 2007-03-06

Something i've noticed is that people are having a hard time adjusting their attitude.

You know; when we define happiness, depression and even luck, it's often about attitude. Your state of being is mostly defined by your experiences and by the world around you. You see or hear something that you want and if you can't get it you get sad or disappointed, this is how humans work.

Those who follow Buddhism realize this as one of the teaching in the religion. People always want more and what we would define as "longing for something" would they define as suffering. I've been thinking about this since I learned about Buddhism at the age of 13-14 or something like that.

I remember telling my teacher then that i did not agree with their views, what they see as suffering, I see as longing. And i still do not see the wisdom in this as I view "longing for something" as important as achieving it's goal.

So there we have it; attitude. I view the longing part as a positive thing while others view it as a negative thing. This permeates everything, what is your attitude towards life?

I for one have a good attitude towards my life, I sometimes slip (I am like you; human.) but in the end I always realize when something is wrong with my attitude. One needs to evaluate attitude on a regular basis. Do you ever stop and think: "Wow, this is really wonderful" for small things like... sandwich you made as a snack to that movie which seemed interesting? I'm speaking of everyday stuff here. Do you pause your life for just a few seconds to appreciate it?

If you do, that's great! If you don't, you really should think about this!

"Give someone your finger and they'll take your whole arm"

This is true about humans, but it doesn't have to be. If you got something you're happy with, be happy with what you've got! Don't turn greedy because it'll only cause you harm.

RE: NN I see your point and I agree, my point however is that Buddhism have flaws, it's probably the only "religion" I have respect for though.

oh, how do I get this to make sense.. First: Liked your blog, made me cheerful. Though I believe that you can interpret Buddhism into what you're saying in the end, that you should be happy with what you've got. 'Cause Buddhism is much about to stop demanding so much all the time and just be one with the world. However, then they also want to leave the world and such of course... but that's another matter. I don't know, my point just being that a bit of Buddhism-thinking might not be all that bad, though you don't have to take it "all the way" so to speak.
